Since the earliest Roman
times sporting events have always figured prominently
in the Roman Calendar. These days bloodthirsty gladiatorial
combat has been replaced with soccer matches at the
Olympic Stadium involving one of Rome's two great
football teams Lazio and Roma.

Six Nations is Europe's premier rugby international tournament. The 2008 tournament starts with a February 2nd 2008 encounter between Ireland and Italy at Croke Park in Ireland at 14:00 GMT and England vs Wales at Twickenham in England at 16:30 GMT and ends with Italy vs Scotalnd in Italy at 13:00 GMT, France vs Wales in Wales at 17:00 GMT and Ireland vs England in England at 17:30 GMT on the 15th March 2008. Two of the matches will be played here in Rome at the Flaminio Stadium. Matches in Rome are played on the 10th February 2008 (Italy vs England at 14:00 GMT) and on the 15th March 2008 (Italy vs Scotland at 13:00 GMT).

Tennis in Rome
The Italian Open Tennis Tournament (Masters series), held every year in May at the Foro Italico tennis park, on the banks of the Tevere river, close to the Olympic Stadium. Surface: red clay. Singles final will be best of five sets. The 2008 tournament will be held from the 5th May 2008 to the 18th May (closing with the women's final), the men's final will be on the 11th May 2008.

Rome Marathon
Tourist crowds clear out of Rome's historic streets each year to make way for a mass of runners. The Rome Marathon has made a name for itself in international running circles. Runners start in the shadow of the Colosseum and proceed through the ancient city passing important landmarks such as the Piazza di Spagna, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and the Saint Peter's. The 2008 edition will be on Sunday 16 March.
